We recommend: Joyeux Noël (2005)

I would like to say that this is a beautiful movie, but this is actually
a beautiful and true story. A real example that wars are not a fight between people but between leaders.

This movie is inspired by a true story, which happened during World War I, for Christmas Eve 1914, in many different places of the battlefront.

When war breaks out in the lull of summer 1914, it surprises and pulls millions of men in its wake.

And Christmas arrives, with it’s snow and multitude of family and army presents. But the surprise won’t come from inside the generous parcels which lie in the French, Scottish, and German trenches.

That night, a momentous event will turn the destinies of four characters: an Anglican priest, a French lieutenant, an exceptional tenor and the one he loves, a wonderful soprano and singing partner. During this Christmas Eve, the unthinkable will happen: rifles will be left at the bottom of the trenches to go to see those opposite, shake their hands, exchange a cigarrete and a piece of chocolate, wish them “Merry Christmas!”…

We recommend: Barbatuques

The Barbatuques, a reference group in Body percussion, produces organic music using the body as a musical instrument. Melodies and different rhythms are created using voice effects and exploration of sounds produced by the human body: hand clapping, cracks, beats, hands and feet, all in tune. The result is amazing.

Everyone has a sonorous body and their own musical imaginary. The sound expression through the human body is probably the older way of making music and communicating in different cultures. This “body music” reveals the accents, practices, behavior codes and tradition of each culture, in each part of the world.

We recommend: Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882) was an American lecturer, essayist, and poet, best remembered for leading the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thought through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.

Emerson wrote most of his important essays as lectures first, then revised them for print. His first two collections of essays – Essays: First Series and Essays: Second Series, published respectively in 1841 and 1844 – represent the core of his thinking, and include such well-known essays as Self-Reliance, The Over-Soul, Circles, The Poet and Experience. Together with Nature, these essays made the decade from the mid-1830s to the mid-1840s Emerson’s most fertile period.

Emerson wrote on a number of subjects, never espousing fixed philosophical tenets, but developing certain ideas such as individuality, freedom, the ability for man to realize almost anything, and the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world.

We recommend: Buena Vista Social Club

The Buena Vista Social Club was a members club in Havana, Cuba that held dances and musical activities, becoming a popular location for musicians to meet and play during the 1940s.

The success sparked a revival of international interest in traditional Cuban music and Latin American music in general. Some of the Cuban performers later released well-received solo albums and recorded collaborations with international stars from different musical genres. The “Buena Vista Social Club” name became an umbrella term to describe these performances and releases, and has been likened to a brand label that encapsulates Cuba’s “musical golden age” between the 1930s and 1950s. The new success was fleeting for the most recognizable artists in the ensemble: Compay Segundo, Rubén González, and Ibrahim Ferrer, who died at the ages of ninety-five, eighty-four, and seventy-eight respectively; Segundo and González in 2003, then Ferrer in 2005.

“In the early 1960′s I had a dream of a type of singing group that I wanted to create. Not just a dream, in the wishful way, but an actual dream while I was asleep. This beautiful dream led to the creation of my group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Now, some forty five plus years later this original dream has led to so many more dreams. We have been awarded Grammy Awards, represented our homeland of South Africa at many prestigious events, including accompanying Nelson Mandela to Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, traveled the world so many times and most importantly, spread a message of Peace, Love and Harmony to millions of people. We recommend: Bobby McFerrin

Bobby McFerrin

Robert “Bobby” McFerrin, Jr. (born March 11, 1950) is an American vocalist and conductor. He is best known for his 1988 hit song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” and he is also a ten-time Grammy Award winner.

As a vocalist, McFerrin often switches rapidly between normal and falsetto registers to create polyphonic effects, performing both the main melody and the accompanying parts of songs. He makes use of percussive effects created both with his mouth and by tapping on his chest. McFerrin is also capable of multiphonic singing; as observed in his song “Drive” from the 2005 DVD Live in Montreal.

A notable document of McFerrin’s approach to singing is his 1984 album The Voice, the first solo vocal jazz album recorded with no accompaniment or overdubbing.

We recommend: Jesusalém

Talvez no olhar.

Acende teu cigarro!
O beijo, amigo, é a véspera do escarro,

[English Version]

Intimate Verses

No one attended, as you ‘ve seen, your last
Chimera’s awe-inspiring funeral.
Ingratitude — that panther — has been all
Your company, but it has been steadfast!

Get used to mud: soon it will hold you fast!
Man living among wild beasts on this foul
And sordid earth cannot resist the call
To turn himself as well into a beast.

Here, take a match. Now light your cigarette!
A kiss is but the eve of being spat,
A stroking hand, my friend, may stone you too.

If your great wound still saddens anyone,
Cast at that vile hand stroking you a stone,
Spit straight into the mouth that kisses you!

Or is this the best sense of humor embedded that any poet has ever had, or is the most comical depression!

This is one of the poems of the work titled “Me and Other Poems” that is public domain and can be downloaded free at the link above (in Portuguese).

Until the age of 15, Yamandu’s only music school was the folk music from the south of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
